Traces of Sorbian history in Bautzen
Protschenberg

Throughout the year, this site, with its unique view of the silhouette of the Tower City, is a popular viewing point for residents and visitors.

Protschenberg is one of the oldest settlement sites in Bautzen. The steeply sloping Spree valley separates the small elevation from the old town of Bautzen already during the settlement period of the old Slavic tribes. The remains of the old castle wall on the Protschenberg are still visible today. Next to the small chapel with a little tower is a cemetery. There is also the last resting place of the Sorbian philologist, writer and publisher Johann Ernst Schmaler (Jan Arnošt Smoler). On Easter Sunday the traditional egg pushing takes place on the slope, facing the river Spree. Throughout the year this historical site, with its unique view of the silhouette of the Tower City, is a popular viewing point for residents and visitors. Mehr
