Traces of Sorbian history in Bautzen
Memorial Jan Smoler

Monument erected in honor of the Sorbian publisher, publicist, and folklorist and a leading figure of the Sorbian movement.

Since the middle of the 20th century the memorial has been located in the green belt of Bautzen for Jan Smoler. The former Sorbian publisher, publicist, linguist and folklorist was one of the most important personalities. At the beginning of the 19th century the studied theologian and philologist founded the Academic Association for Lusatian History and Language, which also had the aim of cultivating Sorbian culture. Furthermore he was co-founder of the Sorbian scientific society "Maćica Serbska". Since the middle of the 19th century he also organized the regular singing festivals. In Bautzen he worked as a publisher and editor of the weekly newspaper "Tydźenska Nowina". Politically he always represented liberal positions and mainly strived for "understanding, reconciliation and unification" between Germans and Slavs. His final resting place is at the Protschenberg cemetery in Bautzen.
